Waller Hugh Paton (Scottish, 1828-1898, R.S.A) – ‘Loch Striven’ landscape watercolour on paper of Loch Striven, with trees to the right, distant hills in background and small boat on the loch. Signed ‘Lock Striven 19th June 1879 W.H.Paton R.S.A’ to bottom. The McEwan Gallery, Glengarden, Ballater, Aberdeenshire, sticker to reverse of frame. Waller Hugh Paton was born in Dunfermline in 1828, born to a damask designer he briefly followed his father into the textile industry before becoming a landscape artist. Hugh was the younger brother of the artist Sir Joseph Noel Paton, who was a good friend of the art critic John Ruskin. It is likely that both the brothers attended his lectures on Pre-Raphaelitism which had an impact on Hugh’s work throughout his career. Perhaps most famed for his studious depictions of the Scottish highlands in both oil paints and watercolour. Paton was one of the few of his generation to work “en plein air” with the fashion at the time being to complete landscapes at the studio rather than in the setting they were found. In 1865 he was admitted to the Scottish academy, where he exhibited over 400 paintings throughout his career. 34.5cm x 24cm.
Frame measures 50cm x 41cm.
