Property of a deceased estate - artefacts from the Pitt-Rivers 'Second' Collection - four Indian painted plaster or clay models of snakes including a rearing cobra, one snake in two parts, some losses, the cobra 8ins. (20.3cms.) high, the longest snake 13.4ins. (34cms.) long (4). Provenance - The Pitt Rivers Second Collection, all four are represented by drawings in the catalogue of inventories of Pitt-Rivers Second Collection, illustrated in 'Rethinking Pitt-Rivers, The Database for Pitt-Rivers's 'Second' Collection', held at the Cambridge University Library, volume 2, page 281, the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th drawings, purchased at The Colonial and Indian Exhibition, London, 1886 (4).
