Charles Landseer (1799-1879) British. "The Departure of Charles II from Bentley in Staffordshire, The House of Colonel Lane", Watercolour, Signed, 20" x 30" (50.8 x 76.2cm). Exhibited: Royal Academy, 1842, No.278. Notes (verso): Miss Lane, having obtained a Parliamentary pass to visit her kinswoman, Mrs Norton, who lived near Bristol, it was arranged that the King personating a neighbour's son, should ride double before the young lady. The remainder of the party consisted of her cousin, a Mr Lascelles and his wife, as well as Mr and Mrs Petre. Old Mr and Mrs Lane descended to the courtyard to witness their daughter's departure; Lord Wilmot, proceeding the party with a hawk on his fist and spaniel by his side passed as a stranger in pursuit of his sport- Clarendon
