A good quality 16 bore French flintlock sporting gun, c 1770, 50" overall, barrel 35" with ocatagonal breech retaining faint traces of silver decoration; flat stepped lock with swan neck cock, the cock and lockplate engraved with scrolls and rocailles and with blank panel for maker's name; walnut half stock with carving around the breech tang and mounts, and with velvet pad on the comb of the butt; engraved silver mounts including wrap around butt plate, trigger guard with scrolled grip, embossed escutcheon, flat side plate engraved with cherubs, two ramrod pipes below the barrel, and also some silver wire inlaid scrolls around the butt cap and escutcheon; with its original bone tipped wooden ramrod. GWO & C, dark patina to barrel, patinated light age wear overall, (traces of old fracture at the wrist). £900-950
