A Cantagali red lustre vase, late 19th or early 20th century, of inverted baluster form, the flared neck with four octopoid handles extending to the shoulders, interspersed with pierced lugs above ridged doubled knopps, blue painted rooster mark and red painted 11/2 to base, 45cm high (at fault)
The piece shows surface wear throughout including wear to the lustre finish, firing pits and frits, and small glazing faults. The rim shows a chip approximately 3.5cm wide, a descending hairline crack running from the centre of the chip for approximately 5cm, a flaked loss approximately 7mm wide, and four further small flaked losses. The interior of the neck shows an applied label 2cm x 1.2cm, and an area of residue approximately 1.5cm x 1.5cm. The exterior neck shows a further area of residue approximately 3cm x 2cm. The body shows chips, nibbles and glazing losses to high points throughout, particularly noticeable to the pierced lugs and ridged knops. The foot rim shows a flaked loss approximately 12mm wide, and two further smaller flaked loss approximately 6mm wide. The piece is dirty and would benefit from cleaning.
