** PEEBLES (SCOTLAND) - LETTER TO PAROLE P.O.W. WITH "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR"; 8 Dec. 1810 EL (overall wrinkling hardly detracts; sealed with wafer) from London (from bankers "P.J. Le Cointe & Co.") to "Mr. Lesecq, Care of james Cairnes Esqre., Agent for Prisoners of War, Peebles, Scotland" charged "2/2" (double 1s-1d inland rate from London; 20 Dec. cds backstamp) with a partly fine double-oval London "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR" nicely placed on the front beside the Edinburgh 23 Dec. transit cds. The contents concern an enclosed returned banker's draft for 300 francs. Very rare; the only recorded Peebles POW cover. [With Van der Linden 2011 Certificate of Genuineness.] [See MFPWE, p.136.]Cross Reference: FRANCE, SCOTLAND, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL
