ARTHUR HAYWARD (1889-1960). St Ives Harbour, Cornwall, signed 'A. Hayward' (lower left), oil on panel, 9 x 13 in. Provenance: Private Collection, Dorset
The painting bears a pencil inscription 'Shore Gallery, St.Ives' on the reverse which suggests a possible dating of mid/late 1920s for this work.
The artist trained at the Warrington School of Art, the Slade and at the Newlyn School of Art, where he studied under Stanhope Forbes. After working at Newlyn, he moved to St Ives c.1924, where he set up a painting school, though little is known of its activities.
In the later 1920's there is a reference to John Park assisting at the school, and other artists, most probably his pupils, exhibited on Show Day at Shore Studio which had formerly been used by the artist Charles Simpson. Hayward's output at this time ranged from his strongly designed portraiture to his brightly coloured studies of St Ives and harbour, such as the example included in this auction. For another similar view by the artist cf. A view titled 'The West Pier, St.Ives '. Illustrated in the Homelovers Book of Fine Prints, 1961, Publ. Frost & Reed Ltd.
