AN EARLY 19TH-CENTURY SIMPLE POCKET MICROSCOPE BY THOMAS RUBERGALL, LONDON
in lacquered-brass, with two threaded eye-pieces to support, with stage and oval base, contained in red morocco-covered wooden case with maker's label for 27 Coventry St. in lid with accessories -- 4in. (10cm.) high
Charles Miller Ltd, 30th October 2013, lot 309.
Dr Mill notes:
There is a trade label in the case lid reading “T, Rubergall Maker 27 Coventry St: Haymarket London which fixes the dates (Gloria Clifton).
The microscope is 9cm high having a cast brass oval base carrying a fixed square pillar. An arm fixed to the top of the pillar bears a set of three demountable lenses. A small round stage slides on the pillar to provide focussing. This stage has a full recessed central aperture in which fits a circular ivory disc, blackened on one side.
A notable feature is that there is no mirror nor any provision to fit one.
Also present is a stage forceps with a peg fitting either of two holes in the stage, two mounted needles and a small pair of brass forceps.
The microscope fits snugly in an attractive case, made of thin wood covered in red leather.
This would have slipped easily into the pocket of a Georgian gentleman's tailcoat.
The instrument and case appear to be in good overall condition.
