A FIRST WORLD WAR PAIR AND TRENCH ART SOUVENIR TO THE SOMERSET LIGHT INFANTRY. A Great War pair comprising War Medal and Victory Medal named to 26143 Pte R.J. Luckham Som L.I. with an identity disc 26143 Pte Luckham Som Li Bapt. and a trench art carving in Somme chalk of the crest of the Somerset Light Infantry. Born at Rew Farm, Marlborough in Wiltshire in 1896 John Luckham served between 1915 and 1918, suffering from ill health as a result of his service he died in 1948 at the age of 57. The trench art carving is inscribed to the reverse 'This came from the Some Trenches in France191_ I bought it home Dad.' His son recalled "My father (Robert John Luckham served in France 1915-18) bought that from France. I don't know how he acquired it, but it was always in our home. My father was in action on the Somme'. Mounted for display with copied research.
