1972 Norton Commando Race Machine
Registration Number: N/A
Frame Number: TBA
- Period competition history
- Nicely restored condition
A very interesting bike period race bike, this Norton was originally sold by Fran Ridewood and Co. of Wells, Somerset as a road going machine. The customer rejected the bike, as he said there was a vibration upon riding. After a complete strip and rebuild, nothing could be found wrong with the bike, but the customer still rejected it and was given a full refund. The bike languished in the showroom, as the Japanese bikes had taken over and sales of them, dominated the market.
The company decided to turn the Commando into a road racer, as a couple of their mechanics, were ‘handy riders‘. Entered into local race events, the bike soon became very competitive in the hands of rider Bill Marks, with his brother Bob as race mechanic.
The Norton won the North Gloucester Motorcycle Racing Club Championship, a series which travelled to circuits around the country, and still holds the lap record at Brands Hatch, for its class.
Having been restored by the current owner, we understand the bike runs and rides well.
