A good early 18th century English stonebow, by Jonathon Johnson of Wigan, length 27", span 24", the folding aperture rearsight engraved with the maker's name in two lines, the stock of fluted dark wood with iron sideplates, mounts and bun finial, the top of the stock inset with a brass panel engraved with hatched design and a rose. In good untouched condition with pleasing dark age patina overall. Wigan was a centre for crossbow manufacturing in the 18th Century, and Johnson was a leading maker, he died in 1760. £750-1000
