A George V silver and tortoiseshell cigarette box by Mappin & Webb, Birmingham 1927, of square form, silver frame with panels of tortoiseshell, the lid with Greek key decoration, presentation inscription 'W.V.S (Women's Voluntary Service) To Mrs E. Gore-Llyod From Group 6 Sub Group A.C.D Centre Organisers. Group D Nov.5th 1942', 9x9x5cm On 16 May 1938, the British government set out the objectives of the Women's Voluntary Service for Civil Defence: It was seen ''as the enrolment of women for Air Raid Precaution Services of Local Authorities, to help to bring home to every household what air attack may mean, and to make known to every household''.
