Austrian painter of the 20th century of the interwar period. Down from Karlsbad, attended the painting school by Franz Hohenberger. Studied from 1906 to 1910 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Christian Griepenkerl and Rudolf Bacher, together with Anton Faistauer, Sebastian Isepp, Ferdinand Kitt, Anton Kolig, Anton Emanuel Peschka, Egon Schiele and Franz Wiegele. Early influences from Gustav Klimt, Albin Egger-Lienz and Ferdinand Hodler, from 1920 dealing with the Dutch painter Pieter Brueghel the older. But also influences of expressionism and new objectivity. Knapped close contacts with Ernst Huber, Franz von Zülow and Ferdinand Kitt, the so -called Neumarkrunde. Member of the Vienna Secession and the Prague Secession. 1930 foundation of the Zinkenbach painter colony, the members met in the summer in the Salzkammergut around the Wolfgangsee. From 1946 to 1963 Professor of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, his students included Alfred Hrdlicka, Arnulf Rainer, Giselbert Hoke, Josef Mikl, Wolfgang Hollegha and Heinrich Maria Hunger. Created landscapes, still lifes and genres scenes in earthy colors and later expressionist coloring.
