George Edwards - Rare engraving of the Argus Pheasant 1765.
This very rare hand-coloured engraving of The Argus, a species of pheasant from the Northernmost part of China the size of a cock turkey, was drawn by George Edwards and engraved by John Frederick Miller 1765.
Originally published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, the feathers and drawing of which were sent from Canton to John Fothergill, M.D. F. R. S.
The image depicts a beautiful pheasant from China. It has a speckled body with a long tail, and a red and blue head. At the top the sheet there is a large image depicting a feather, showing the pattern on it.
Size: 7in x 12.5in (18cm x 32cm).
