A VERY FINE IRISH – CORK – 18TH CENTURY SILVER LADLE, circa 1785, nicely shaped bowl with a long-pointed stem decorated with bright-cut engraving and a crossed arrows crest to the tip. Very good clear silver marks to the reverse: Maker’s mark of JN along with STERLING mark. Maker’s name: John Nicholson. Dimensions: 20cm long. Weight: 50grams.
More About the Maker: First mentioned in 1756 with a location of 70, Grand Parade. The Nicholson family produced silver in Cork from the middle of the 18th century right up the middle of the 19th. John Nicholson I was first a sword cutter and gradually over the years moved into he silver & goldsmithing. His son John Nicolson II presumed to be his son was a noted goldsmith and jeweller with a business on North Main Street in the city of Cork.
