1st Essex Artillery Volunteers Victorian Officer’s Dress Pouch.
A scarce late 19th Century example, the flap faced with dark blue cloth edged with silver artillery pattern lace and bearing Royal Arms, flanked by oak leaf and laurel sprays in silver embroidery. “FIRST” padded crimson velvet scroll over silvered metal gun with revolving wheel resting on padded crimson velvet tri-part scroll “ESSEX ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS”. White metal suspension loops, complete with pocket. Overall GC, some dulling to lace.
The HQ of the 1st Essex Artillery Volunteers was at Harwich from 1880 and then from 1894 at Stratford. The pouch worn by the unit until 1894 when the title “Artillery Volunteers” was changed to “Volunteer Artillery” on the consolidation of the Volunteer Artillery Batteries.
