We are pleased to be offering this lot from the stock of family run firm Shipton and Co., who were based in Hastings White Rock area, and who were unfortunately forced to close their doors in 2014 after a section of the rock face above collapsed onto their shop, making the building unsafe.  Amethyst and citrine are both members of the quartz family.  Amethyst occurs with hues from a light lavender to a deep purple.  It has been highly revered throughout history by many cultures. The Greeks believed amethyst gems could prevent intoxication, while medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in battle because of it's supposed healing properties.  Amethyst beads have been found in Anglo-Saxon graves in England and Anglican bishops wear an episcopal ring often set with an amethyst.  Tibetans consider amethyst sacred to the Buddha and make prayer beads from it. It was considered a symbol of royalty during the Middle Ages and used to decorate English regalia. As one of the Old World  'Cardinal Gems', it was one of the five gemstones considered precious above all others.  Amethyst is the birthstone of February.  Citrine is first documented as being appreciated  in Greece between 300 and 150 BC as a golden-yellow gemstone and due to a superstition that it would bring prosperity has been referred to as the 'money stone', or 'merchant's stone'.
