CHINA - UNPAID BOXER REBELLION MAIL; Unusual unfranked July 1900 env. (peripheral faults) to Plymouth endorsed 'Active service/No stamps available/G Mullins Capt Rifles' with FPO No. 4, Base Office, London and Plymouth cds all on rear. Taxed en route in India with framed "POSTAGE DUE/ONE ANNA" and London "1D/F.B/D." h.s. applied to front. Note: Captain Mullins & 50 Marines marched to Tien-tsin, from where this letter was probably sent, following an attack by Boxer forces. Ex 'Contractor' (1999) where sold in a London auction for £500.
