Cuba: 1869 7% Loan, 1000 pesos, #646, signed by Jose Morales Lemus, Liberty in centre, green. Authorised $20,000,000 pesos. Loan raised in New York to fight the 10-years war against Spanish rulers between 1868 and 1878 which was unsuccessful. Two further wars ensued culminating in the Spanish American War of 1898 when Spain lost its control over Cuba. Jose Morales Lemus , who usually signs these certificates was a wealthy lawyer and Independence figure who died in 1870. Near EF and rare.
