£700 - £900
AN UNUSUAL BRITISH CRIMEAN WAR PERIOD ROYAL ENGINEERS DRIVERS SWORD AND SCABBARD. With an 88 cm curved, pointed, single edged fullered blade with British Liege inspector's acceptance stamp over S&K for Schnitler and Kirschbaum. Also double broad arrow mark for 'sold out of stores' and crown over FW and 50 for Friedrich Wilhelm IV, King of Prussia, 1850. With a broad open basket type hilt and wooden grip. In heavy steel scabbard with twin ring suspension. 105 cm overall.
This pattern was originally experimental and issued to only about one squadron of the Prussian Guard Hussar Regiment, and it has been suggested that 170 or fewer of these swords were produced. The sword was rejected by the Prussian army and they were sold to the British as an emergency weapon for the Crimean War.
See National Army Museum Review, 1982, pp. 42-44 for a full description of this pattern.
Good condition with only light surface marking and wear.
