A FIRST WORLD WAR BATTENBURG COURSE INDICATOR FROM SMS HINDENBURG. A base plate for a Battenburg course indicator with a 360 degree scale to the outer edge and 1 - 170 to the lower half, with a paper label 'Batenburg Course Indicator a mechanical calculator for triangulating Velocity for gunfire. Also known as a Dumerique, Salvaged from S.M.S. Hindenberg scuttled in 1919 at Scapa Flow. Raised by Cox & Danke in 1931'.
The S.M.S. Hindenburg was a Battlecruiser of the Imperial Navy, third of the Derfflinger class with eight 12" guns. Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter ordered the ship to be scuttled on the 21st June 1919.
