The new Clipper of 1953 relaunched Royal Enfield into the 250cc class. The Clipper’s engine featured a cast-iron top end, integral oil tank and a separate gearbox, all within a swinging-arm frame design that had debuted on the Bullet in 1949. A 350cc Clipper was added to the range in November 1955, deploying the Model G engine in the swinging-arm frame to create a cheaper alternative to the Bullet. Both Clippers were dropped from the range during 1957, though the name was revived the following year for a ‘budget’ version of the new unit-construction Crusader 250 – the Clipper II. Enfield then put the Model G engine into the Crusader cycle parts to create a new 350 Clipper.
This 1959 350cc Clipper comes from a small private collection, complete with known history, original buff log book and manual on DVD. The Clipper has been converted to coil/alternator electrics, is said to start very easily and used regularly. Last serviced in 2023, this entry level British bike will make the ideal starter classic.
