Attributed to Edward Bird RA (British, 1772-1819) - Portrait of Thomas Pole M. D. - An early 19th century oil on board portrait painting of physician and Quaker minister Thomas Poole. The portrait depicting the subject three-quarter holding a hip bone with book to the side. Curtain in the background. Unsigned and unframed.
Thomas Pole (1753-1829) was a physician and Quaker minister born in Philadelphia. Brought up as a member of the Society of Friends, Pole visited England in 1775 and travelled on horseback some 6650 miles through England and Wales. He studied with the physician Joseph Rickman at Maidenhead before continuing his training in Reading. He settled in London in 1781 and was admitted a member of the Company of Surgeons, receiving a degree of MD from St. Andrew's University in 1801.
