Austrian painter of the 20th century, especially of the interwar period. Originated from Karlsbad, attended the painting school of Franz Hohenberger. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1906 to 1910 with Christian Griepenkerl and Rudolf Bacher, together with Anton Faistauer, Sebastian Isepp, Ferdinand Kitt, Anton Kolig, Anton Emanuel Peschka, Egon Schiele and Franz Wiegele. Early influences of Gustav Klimt, Albin Egger-Lienz and Ferdinand Hodler, from 1920 onwards engagement with the Dutch painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder. But also influences of Expressionism and New Objectivity. Established close contacts with Ernst Huber, Franz von Zülow and Ferdinand Kitt, the so-called Neumarktrunde. Member of the Vienna Secession and the Prague Secession. 1930 Founded the Zinkenbach Painters' Colony, members met in summer in the Salzkammergut around Lake Wolfgang. From 1946 to 1963 professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, his students included Alfred Hrdlicka, Arnulf Rainer, Giselbert Hoke, Josef Mikl, Wolfgang Hollegha and Heinrich Maria Hunger. Created landscapes, still lifes and genre scenes in earthy tones and later expressionist color scheme.
