"Flying Cloud in a Gale off Donegal Bay, 1879," O.O.P., 45cms x 75cms (17 1/2" x 29 1/2").
bears label on frame "Flying Cloud The Property of Bagot Blood Esq in a gale of wind on Donegal Bay" Signed with monogram, lower right. (1)
Although the rigging has been changed slightly, this is likely the 75 ton "Flying Cloud" built by Inman of Lymington and owned by Count Edmund Batthyana-Strattman of the Royal Albert Yacht Club, a schooner rigged yacht that won several races in the early 1870's. The year 1879 was notorious for severe storms in the North Atlantic. In the painting, the yacht appears to be in imminent danger of being shipwrecked on the rocky coastline.
