A Jain Manuscript Page from the Kalpasutra, Depicting a Royal Scene and Ram Fight, Mewar Ragini, Late 18th Century.
An illustrated folio from a Jain Kalpasutra manuscript, originating from the Mewar region of Rajasthan. Rendered in vibrant gouache with natural pigments on handmade paper, the manuscript combines devotional text with vivid imagery.
The folio is divided into two narrative registers on the right. The upper panel shows a richly adorned royal court scene—possibly depicting a ruler under a parasol in conversation, surrounded by attendants and domesticated animals. The lower panel presents a dramatic ram fight, with two wrestlers gripping ropes as their rams clash, overseen by an eager crowd.
The text, written in Devanagari script with key portions highlighted in red ink, is bordered by stylized floral designs.
