A Southern Railway Battle of Britain Class enamel badge in its original brass surround depicting the Royal Air Force official coat of arms with its motto, PER ARDUA AD ASTRA which translates as Through Adversity to the Stars. These badges were carried by Battle of Britain class engines named after wartime RAF stations and commands, types of aircraft and WWII personalities who did not have a personal coat of arms. Enamel, in original brass surround, 21½"x27¾", one small chip restored on the background.
