Black half morocco and original publishers brown embossed cloth-covered boards, some nibbles to ends of back strip and some rubbing, contemporary ink signature to ffep, 96 hand-coloured lithographic maps and city plans as called for (some being inset) with half being of the USA, some light finger soiling, a couple of spots, vg, S. Augustus Mitchell, Philadelphia, 1872. An important atlas of America and the world belonging to a line of atlases initiated by Henry Tanner and continued by several other publishers, including Samuel Augustus Mitchell, and reflecting the ongoing developments in western states and territories in the years following the Kansas-Nebraska Act and leading up to the Civil War.
