A mid 17th century rapier, 34” blade of slender diamond section with deep fullers bearing illegible signature, “Mortuary” style hilt, the shallow guard with crosspiece extending through the centre terminating in short recurved quillons, the knucklebow having small curled side guards, and with “bud” pommel and spiral wooden grip. GC for age (the grip wormed and crudely filled). Note: this type of hilt is more often associated with a broadsword blade. £300-500
