An outstanding and very scarce Military Medal Group to 75045 Gnr. Herbert Ledger 'D' Bn. Tank Corps along with associated ephemera. This group comprises: MM Geo V Gnr. H. Ledger 'D' Bn: Tank Corps. BWM & VM: M2-188970 Pte. H. Ledger ASC. (mic confirms BWM VM only) WW2 Defence Medal in box of issue addressed to Mr H. Ledger, Pheasant Cottage, Sutton Rd, Maidstone, Kent. Included is his father's GV Special Constabulary LSM to 'George Ledger'. The MM has its original box lid & registered envelope. The following items are included which give an insight into his life after the war. 1) Medal ribbon bar for MM. BWM. VM. 2) Maidstone & District Motor Services Ltd. 25 year service lapel badge. 3) Boxed St Johns Ambulance Driving Service Medal with bars for: 1930, 1931, 1932, 1939, 1941 & 1943. Engraved Herbert Ledger No 312818 & registered St Johns Gate & Clerkenwell'. 4) St John Ambulance Association lapel badge x2. 5) Ramblers Association Badge by Wylie London. 6) Manchester Regt. 'Old Comrades Assoc. Manchester Regt'. 7) ARP. Borough of Maidstone. 7) Air Training Corps lapel badge. 8) Copy of a postcard picture of 'C2' ditched. 8) Small unidentified green label badge. 9) Tank Corps receipt slip for the BWM & VM. 10) Large copy photograph of 'Dracula' being guarded by two Germans at Delta House. Herbert Ledger was born 23.3.1885, son of George & Emma. He joined the ASC as a driver and was the driver of Tank 'C2' 'Cognac' at the Battle of Flers Courcelette on 15.9.16 as an ASC driver. He was badly injured and sent back to the UK, from there he was transferred to 'D' Bn. where he won the MM driving Tank D44 'Dracula' (Lieut. C.L.S. Symonds) part of 9 section No 12 Coy. The MM was won at St Julien on the Poelcapelle Road at Delta House with Lt. Symonds who won the M.C. both of whom worked on the Tank 'Dracula' within 50 yards of the enemy for 2 hours before abandoning it. His service papers have survived. There are many references to Ledger in the various Tank books. Sold with additional information. A rare WW1 Tank Corps Group. Medals etc. contained in Ledger's Manikin Cigar box.. He died at home aged 89 on 1.10.1974. (Qty)
