A large Chinese famille rose ‘Magu’ dish, Yongzheng period, finely painted with the figure of Magu holding lingzhi fungus, with an attendant and a deer each carrying a peach, standing beside a plum tree, bamboo and rockwork, the broad rim decorated with six flower sprays, 37.2cm diameter, splinter chip to edge of foot

cf. similar dishes and plates painted with the 'magu' theme were commissioned by Augustus II (1670-1733), King of Poland and Elector of Saxony known as Augustus the Strong, Existing examples with old Dresden inventory are respectively in the Dresden collection, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and in the former Collection Ignazio Vok. A 39cm dish with the same design and inventory number was sold by Christie's London, 30 April 2015, lot 111

More Information

There is a splinter chip to the edge of the foot on the base, some pencil marking to the underside of the dish. There are some indentations to the potting of the dish in the lower right hand corner but this is in manufacture under the glaze. Minor scratching to the glaze. Old collectors label to the base
