Romano-British Shield Brooch. Circa 80-150 CE. Copper-alloy, 35mm. Formed of a hexagonal plate with a raised a central boss on a field of red enamel with four white enamelled circular cells. Found near Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
This brooch appears to represent an Iron Age form of shield. It can be compared to several other 'shield'-shaped plate brooches (Mackreth 2011: 126, plate 123), in particular one from Cambridgeshire (Mackreth 2011: 126, plate 123, no.7898). The only example recovered from a dated context comes from Verulamium (AD 80-150).
