This painting is after the original work at Burghley House, Stamford. Lincolnshire which is first recorded in the 1763 Inventory there..
The subject depicts Venus holding her son Cupid's bow as his father Mercury teaches him to read.
An etching in reverse of the same subject by Giovanni Agostino Ratti is in the collection of the British Museum
The Florentine born Luti worked mostly in Rome. His major patron there was Cosimo 111 of Medici, The Grand Duke of Tuscany.
