Books: Charles Dickens' Works somewhat similar to the well-known Household Edition this much scarcer undated Chapman & Hall edition of Dickens' Works in eighteen soft cover divisions, supplied to subscribers only at 2s each, is based on the 1890-92 reprints with the wonderful illustrations by the Dalziel Brothers and Frederick Barnard in particular. The ornamental cover design by Barnard with Dickens' characters all round Samuel Pickwick who stands atop a pile of the Household Edition works, is used throughout, and occasional use is made of the original title pages from the reprints. The text is printed in two columns per page and the frequent illustrations are of good size and occasionally full-page. The format is quarto or slightly smaller and this set is indeed pre-loved. The overall condition reflects much use over many years and most parts now have reinforced spines; two indeed have complete new wrappers over the originals. The text is clean and perfectly readable throughout. Unfortunately the 6th and 7th Divisions. A full list is available on request.
