AN INTRIGUING FIRST WORLD WAR TRIO TO A POSSIBLE MILITARY MEDAL RECIPIENT. A Great War trio comprising 1914 Star named to 6422 Pt P. Behan R. IR FUS. War Medal and Victory Medal named to 6422 Pte P Hooligan R. IR FUS. Patrick Holohan was born in Dublin 1881 to Margaret Behan and Patrick Holohan. He attested for 'Short Service' on the 5th December 1898 with the Royal Irish Fusiliers, at the time an 18 year old labourer from Dublin, having previously rejected as he was under age. His attestation papers have been marked 'Alias Behan' and his service record states 'Permitted to change his name to Patrick Behan' on the 15th September 1902. He is also confirmed with an entitlement to a Queen's South Africa Medal with Orange Free State and Transvaal clasps, and King's South Africa Medal with 1901 and 1902 clasps. He was re-engaged on the 20th October 1910. Serving with the 1st Battalion he served in France from 1st September 1914. He narrowly avoided death in an action on the 21st October 1914 at Armentiers when a bullet grazed his chest but 'did not penetrate - the mark of a small abrasion is discernible' he later claimed a disability pension as he had difficulty lifting with his right arm - the result of a gun shot wound. He is discharged on the termination of his first period of service from the Royal Irish Fusiliers on the 17th December 1915. The Medal Index Card for 6422 P. Behan lists the 1914 Star with entry and also notes a deletion from the 1914-15 Star Roll. A Medal Index Card for 6422 Patrick Hooligan lists only War and Victory medals. A record shows a P. Hooligan, private number 6422 with the Royal Irish Fusiliers as being entitled to a Military Medal. This slightly confused military record may be a confusion of the records or the result of circumstances unknown when Patrick Holohan changed his name to Patrick Behan. With copied research including two Medal Index Cards, service history and roll extracts.
