JAPANESE EDO PERIOD BLACK AND GOLD LACQUER WRITING TABLE (BUNDAI), 19th century, of standard form with fudegaeshi (raised sections to left and right), decorated in gold and slight silver takamaki-e with highlights of inlaid shell and kirikane with a bold design of a peacock standing on rocks from which issue abundant peony blossoms, before a cascading waterfall, its tail trailing behind, on a black-lacquer ground sprinkled with sparse hirame flakes; the outer sides of the legs embellished in mura-nashiji, unsigned; together with a lacquered wood storage box. height 15.5 cm x width 61.5 cm x depth 30.5 cm

There is a surface crack approx. 16 cm underneath the raised edge and where it joins the table top on one side. This raised piece of lacquered wood is slightly detached from the table and moves when pressure is applied. General surface wear and small chips to lacquer mostly on the feet. One raised edge there are two small areas where the lacquer has been scratched.
