A RARE LATE 19TH CENTURY / EARLY 20TH CENTURY IRISH WALL CLOCK, from the renowned maker Hilser Bros. of Cork. This is a remarkable and timeless piece of Corkonian horological history. More about the makers: Being a product of the expertise of the Schwarzwald clockmakers, from the region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Developing as a distinct form of clock-working in the 17th century, the relatively simple and rustic designs of the Schwarzwald clocks, as well as the concept of grandfather, cuckoo, and alarm clocks, were introduced to Ireland in the 1860s by Richard Hilser. The business began its operations in Cork City on 92 South Main Street, later moving to the Grand Parade under the watch of Richard's son, Henry Hilser, who was born 12 July 1875, and who was active as a clockmaker/jeweller, according to census records, from the 1890s-1910s; a number of the family's clocks featured in the Cork International Exhibition of 1902, the second of its kind in Ireland since 1852. Hilser Bros. remains in operation in Bandon, Co. Cork. This example remains in good condition, with immense potential with some conditioning. 54cm diameter.
