£2,000 - £4,000
Circle of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723 - 1792)
Portrait of an infantry officer
Oil on canvas
With an old label verso, 'A & N AUX. C. S. L.'
In an original carved and gilded frame
The gorget worn round the neck of the sitter is that of an infantry officer, probably that of the 32nd Regiment of Foot. Wearing both his sash and gorget, he is 'on duty', which would be laid aside for society or non-duty occasions.
We are grateful to Andrew Cormack, for his assistance in cataloguing.
