Santo Christo de Costello, wrecked 1667, also known as 'The Mullion Pin Wreck' Brass artefacts from ship's cargo Brass fragment of a lion's 'ball and claw' furniture detail. Possibly 15th or 16th century. 10 x 5.5cm, together with a smaller simiar piece 7 x 5cm. The Santo Christo de Costello was a mid‐17th century Genoese merchant ship on her maiden voyage, sailing from Amsterdam where she was built, en route to Genoa. She was wrecked near Mullion Cove in Cornwall. Her captain was Lorenzo Vivano. She was armed with 48 guns, some of which were bronze, she carried cloth, spices and a general cargo, including "piggs" of lead. Recent research has shown that she was also carrying two painting by Rembrandt. After leaving Falmouth, she took shelter from gales but after lying at anchor for two days, she was driven ashore in Mullion Cove on 7th October 1667. The captain and most of the crew got ashore in the ships boats, but 25 men and women were drowned.
