Charles Ford, Barnstaple, a gold open-faced pocket watch the gold dial with engraved floral decoration, raised Roman numerals, blued steel hands and signed Ford, Barnstaple, the chain fusee movement, as supplied by the Coventry Watch Movement Manufactory Company, having a plain gold balance and engraved with the name Chas. Ford, 89, High Street, Barnstaple, the case having engraved decoration to the case sides and rear and hallmarked within for 18ct gold, London 1967 along with the casemakers initials W.F., probably William Francis of Clerkenwell, diameter 40mm, total weight ca. 57.4gms. Together with a ladies 18ct gold rectangular cocktail watch, stamped 18, .750, the movement stamped Moeris, diameter 12mm, total weight ca. 10.4gms. Biography: Charles Ford was a Jeweller and Watchmaker with premises at 89, High Street, Barnstaple from before 1866 until at least 1887 when the business was taken over by Sly & Co. Ford supplied and fitted a number of turret clocks around the area including the stable clock at Arlington Court in circa 1864, church clocks at Chittlehampton and Braunton along with the clock for the Albert Memorial Tower in Barnstaple. The Charles Ford London-made shop regulator sold at Christie's, London in 2003.
