TWICE-POSTED WRAPPER - CASH-PAID AT 2c RATE THEN REPOSTED WITH EXTRA 8c (DUE TO MISSING PAPER BAND); Unique(?) 25 Mar. 1872 E (mourning paper - probably a printed death notice) assessed to postage twice on the same day; initially paid 2c in cash as Printed Matter - with "1e" (1st post of the day) "BELLENAVES" 25 Mar. cds and v. fine red boxed "PD" (both still just visible beneath the stamps added later in the day). Then the PO found the sender later in the day to explain that the 2c rate needed a paper band wrapper and so - for this letter without the band - a further 8c was needed for the 10c letter rate. As a result there are strips of 3 and 5 1c stamps tied by the "2e" (2nd post of the day) "BELLENAVES" 25 Mar. cds, and there is a partial Clermont Ferrand arrival cds (26 Mar.) on the flap. Astonishing item that shows both rates paid on the same day. [Ex Gavin Fryer.] Cross Reference: PRINTED MATTER BY POST
