George James Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, H.R.W.S. (British, 1843-1911), Friedberg, signed, dated 1909, titled and inscribed verso, watercolour, 26 by 36cm, gilt frame. Notes: George Howard was an English aristocrat, peer, politician and painter, the last Earl of Carlisle to own Castle Howard. Belonging to the 'Etruscan School' of painters, he was a friend and patron to a number of Pre-Raphaelite artists, particularly Edward Burne-Jones. William Morris was an intimate friend.
