A Japanese tortoiseshell comb, Meiji period. Decorated with gold lacquer branches and flowers, 4 x 9cm; a Japanese gold lacquer comb, early 20th century, signed, decorated with mother of pearl flowerheads, 4.5 x 10cm; two similar Japanese combs, late 19th century, with gold lacquer leaf decoration, 2.5 x 13cm and 2.5 x 13.5cm; a Japanese tortoiseshell and gold lacquer comb, Meiji period, decorated with a seated figure and calligraphy, flanked by birds and clouds, 3.3 x 8cm; two Japanese ebonised and gold lacquer combs, one signed and the other with kogai, 4.5 x 9.5cm and 4 x 8.3cm; a Japanese brown lacquer comb, signed, decorated with arrows, 4.5 x 10cm; and a small Japanese faux tortoiseshell and gold lacquer comb, 2.5 x 7.7cm. (10) From the collection of Pat Johnstone, a Cornish artist and sculptor, who also had a passion for collecting Asian antiques and especially Japanese combs, kogai and kanzashi. Her collection has been curated for over 40 years and includes items from the Miriam Slater collection.
