SAMUEL PROUT (British, 1783–1852), “WATERMILL STUDY AND OTHERS”, watercolour sketch on buff wove paper from artist’s sketch book. (i) Front sketches depict an of old watermill (possibly a preparatory sketch for ‘The Old Mill near Monmouth’, as well as sketches of a bearded man’s head, pistol, sheep, man in ‘cavalier’ type feathered hat. (ii) verso sketches depict a bearded man, pistol and daggers. Similar in style to skull illustrated in one of Prout’s pocket sketchbooks described on page 157 of Richard Lockett’s ‘Samuel Prout’. Dimensions: 17cm x 25cm approx.
