£420
Chinese School (19th century),
A set of ten gouache on pith paper paintings,
Depicting scenes of Court and Trade, including an Emperor and Empress each seated in robes holding a Ruyi Sceptre, a Court being presented to their Emperor, a scene of silk production, a processional scene with a Dragon puppet, and a band playing a variety of musical instruments, with others,
19cm H x 31cm W,
Framed and glazed (10)
The pictures are framed under glass and have not been removed for inspection. The colours are generally clean and bright throughout, showing only minor fading given their age. Most show some dead insects present behind the glass. One painting (of the dragon puppet) shows some insect damage to the lower edge, a tear to the top edge approximately 3cm long, a tear to the top right corner approximately 1cm long and a tear to the bottom edge approximately 8cm long. The others show the odd small tear to the paper edge and the occasional small area of insect damage. All the sheets show a degree of surface rippling, most noticeably on the more densely coloured works. The works which use the paper as the sky show some vertical streaking, the odd small stain and some age-related darkening. All the frames are structurally sound, but all show the odd loss to the black finish and gilt highlights.
