Two large feather shuttlecocks circa 1860/70, 14cm long (2)
Note: This near pair of shuttlecocks would have been used for the early game of Battledore and Shuttlecock. The aim of this game was to create the longest rally possible. Using a vellum covered long handled bat called a battledore, players would hit the shuttlecock to each other for as long as possible. There was no court and the distance between players varied. These large shuttlecocks consist of goose feathers with a dark coloured velvet covering the head decorated with gold coloured braid.
