Cotherstone won the 1843 Derby by two lengths and the 2000 Guineas, again ridden by Wiliam Scott and trained by John Scott. John Bowes had four Derby winners, making him one of the most successful breeders. The other two paintings from the set, identically presented, are held by and on view at the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle and sold together with a portrait of Isaac Walker, the head groomsman at Streatlam Stud 1833-1872, following in from his father.
