INWARDS 4d PRIVATE SHIP LETTER; 2 Mar. 1870 mourning env. to Cape Town endorsed "Per Private Steamer 'Good Hope' via Falmouth" and so franked correctly for the little-used 4d Ship Letter rate by a GB 1865 4d Vermilion (pl.11; SG93/J58) tied by a partly fine "MALMSBURY/192" Duplex with a slightly overstruck very fine large red "2d" Accountancy Mark (2d due to CGH) alongside. Though so much cheaper than the 1/- Packet rate this 4d Ship Letter rate was seldom used. Sold for £160 in our June 2009 sale. Ex Wheat. Cross Reference: ACCOUNTANCY MARKS, OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS, MOURNING COVERS, SHIP LETTERS
