38th Middlesex (Artists) Rifle Volunteers Victorian shako plate badge circa 1860-78. Good scarce die-stamped blackened brass laurel sprays surmounted by Imperial crowned MR cypher with 38 resting on a scroll inscribed ARTISTS, to the oval centre the conjoined heads of Mars and Minerva and CUM MARTE MINERVA. Toned loops. Tip of crown bent. GC Badge designed by J.W. Wyon the famous medal designer who served as a private in the Corps. Unit raised as 38th Middlesex RV, renumbered 20th in 1880.
