PREPAID MAIL TO INDIA (EARLIEST KNOWN?) + OFFICIAL MAIL FORWARDED TO EGYPT; Fine and attractive 14 Aug. 1847 E (cross-written family contents with unusual cameo embossed wafer seal) to "Dum Dum, Calcutta, Via Suez" with v. fine "MALTA/PAID" cds and red m/s "5" rate on the front and "ALEXANDRIA" (British PO) and "CALCUTTA/STEAM LETTER" datestamps on the flap (believed to be the earliest known letter from Malta to India); plus uncharged Consular 1853 EL from Messina to Alexandria forwarded with fancy "Consulato di Sardegna/in Malta" cachet and cds on the reverse.
